Since 1991, the vaulted cellars of the "Hôtel de Ville" houses the Museum of Hand-made Lace. More than 500 pieces of lace are exhibited alongside the tools used by the traditional lacemaker.
The tradition of lacemaking in Arlanc dates from the 16th Century. Profiting from the clothes in fashion at the time, Arlanc became a place for the production of hand-made lace. Collars, cuffs, gloves and even the top of shoes were adorned with lace. The passion was such that edicts were published to regulate its place of manufacture. It was from 1875 that the hand-made lace from Arlanc acquired its "letters of nobility" with the needlemade lace called "Renaissance Lace". Even Queen Victoria wore lace made in Arlanc during the Great Exhibition in 1900...
Today, thanks to the association of the "Friends of Lace", lace "au carreau" is still made in the traditional way in Arlanc. Each week, the lacemakers get together to share, pass on and relive the intricate moves involved in the technic of lacemaking.
Discover the know-how, the differences between the laces, the tools of the lacemaker… thanks to the exhibition and also the didactic posters and an audio visual document.
